While it is fantastic that the Vancouver Aquarium has plans to expand the cetacean tanks, we ask that no more cetaceans are added to the park. The tanks are already too small, and no matter how large they are built, they will never be big enough. Building them larger only to put more animals in them defeats any purpose of enlarging them. Please phase out cetacean captivity at the Vancouver Aquarium!
Although the aquarium's harbour porpoises were found orphaned and beached and are unreleasable, rumours abound surrounding the pacific white sided dolphins and their possible origins from Taiji, Japan. At least one of the belugas was taken from the wild too, and the aquarium associates with Seaworld for breeding purposes, a park that still does import wild caught animals. We do not believe the addition of more cetaceans to the park will be an ethical action, nor a humane one when you look at the risks and traumas of transportation.
Conservation efforts are far more valuable and important than any form of cetacean shows. Please be a leader of the future, phase out captive cetaceans at the Vancouver Aquarium and set an example for marine parks around the world.
