Caribou recovery stifled by backwards
logging plans

Hi Paov,

Here in Canada and all over the world species are dying out. We’re in the sixth mass extinction and it’s driven by corporate greed and lax governments. The incredible thing is that species are resilient, and if given a home without threats they can rebound quickly. We just need to give them a chance. Nestled in the Rocky Mountains live three southern mountain caribou herds fighting for survival in the face of logging company West Fraser’s brutal clearcut plans. The company announced plans to log 54 cutblocks within the winter range of the La Peche caribou herd near Willmore Wilderness Area.

West Fraser is pushing to log this September. This will devastate the herd. Write my letter today! Photo: John E. Marriott Only six per cent of West Fraser's total tenure area is within these caribou ranges. The other 94 per cent of their tenure area does not overlap with caribou range. These cutblocks don’t need to be here, and harm from the cutblocks to the caribou herd is avoidable and unnecessary.

The federal government just announced its commitment to recover caribou herds within Jasper National Park, including the La Peche herd. A maternity pen is being funded to help recover populations. But we cannot expect caribou to recover in the long term without habitat. These cutblocks must be cancelled.

Nearby, wolves continue to be killed from helicopters and poison. Habitat restoration projects are also happening just on the other side of the river from these newly proposed cutblocks. This is not how recovery happens — taking one step forward and five steps back. Write now! These incredible mature forests and the creatures within need protection from West Fraser’s logging plans. We need to change how industry operates, and it starts here.

Tell the federal government, the Alberta government and West Fraser their 54 cutblocks do not belong in caribou habitat.
