r1 Time to get to work on climate action and social justice ...
Dear Paov,

I am a staff lawyer at West Coast Environmental Law and I’m reaching out to you today from my office here in Algonquin Anishinabe territory, now known as Ottawa.

Since 2016, I have been on the ground in the capital connecting with decision makers and acting as a government watchdog on behalf of West Coast supporters like you. With the new federal cabinet that was unveiled last night, we need to ensure the environment, Indigenous rights and social justice stay at the top of the national agenda.

West Coast donors allow my colleagues and me to continue working on a number of urgent federal priorities, from fixing Canada’s impact assessment rules to enacting a new climate accountability law. But there is so much more to be done.
HELP US CONTINUE OUR WORK During the election, the incoming government made a long list of promises, including commitments that advance important priorities that we work on here at West Coast. Now our team is ready to hold decision makers accountable and make sure they follow through.

We’ll be closely watching for progress on a range of important commitments pushing for greater ambition where needed, including:
  • Implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, including ensuring consistency of all Canadian laws with the Declaration
  • Implementing a plan that ensures Canada reduces its emissions 60% by 2030 (a more ambitious target than the 40-45% by 2030 currently promised)
  • Protecting 30% of land and oceans by 2030 and investing in Indigenous-led conservation
  • Protecting more old growth forests in BC with a $50 million BC Old Growth Nature Fund
By making a donation to West Coast today, you can help us ensure that these and other key environmental promises are reflected in the mandate letters for new Ministers in the coming months. DONATE NOW Paov, we’ve always depended on the generosity of our donors, and today, we’re asking you take the next step by making a gift. Any donation you make today will help us to ensure the federal government delivers on its commitments to climate action, respect for Indigenous rights and a healthy environment.

Thank you for being someone we can depend on.

Sincerely,

Anna Johnston
