On February 28, Cuban 5 Hero Fernando González returned to Cuba after being released from U.S. prison. Fernando was in prison for over 15 years, serving every day of his unjust sentence. His return to Cuba has brought great joy and inspiration to people around the world fighting for justice and freedom for the Cuban 5. It has also brought a united call to increase our efforts to free ALL the Cuban 5 now!
At our February 27th meeting, the Free the Cuban 5 Committee – Vancouver sent letters to the Cuban 5 to express our great joy at Fernando's return, as well as our commitment to struggling until ALL of the Cuban 5 are free. With Fernando and René in Cuba, and Antonio, Ramón and Gerardo... still behind prison bars, it is now more important than ever that we continue our united actions to free ALL the Cuban 5. The year 2013 has passed with great victories in the continued struggle to free our 5 heroes. As we look together towards 2014, we are sure that there will be many more victories and challenges in our campaign for justice.
Vancouver will honour our 100th consecutive monthly picket action in front of the U.S. Consulate for freedom for ALL of the 5 Cuban Heroes on March 5, 2014. On this important day, the Free the Cuban 5 Committee -Vancouver invites you to join us at events to honour the 100th picket. Following the March 5th action in Vancouver, there are also events with Stephen Kimber, His Excellency Julio Garmendía Peña, and Miraly González González, the First Secretary of the Cuban Embassy in Canada, in Nanaimo, Kamloops, Seattle and Victoria from March 5- 8. ~ March 5, 2014 marks one year since the passing of Comandante Hugo Chávez, the leader of the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela. This event will also include a special tribute to Comandante Chávez, who stood strong with the Cuban 5 and everyone around the world fighting for social justice.

WHO ARE THE 5 CUBAN HEROES?
Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González, also known as the Cuban 5, are five men who were wrongly accused and convicted in a U.S. Federal Court of “conspiracy to commit espionage” and other fabricated charges, following their arrest and imprisonment in 1998. The 5 were actually unarmed men involved in monitoring Miami-based terrorist organizations, which since 1959 have been responsible for the deaths of over 3,400 people in Cuba, including one resident of Canada, Fabio di Celmo, in 1997. Through their important work, these 5 men were able to prevent further deaths in Cuba. As of March, 2014 René González and Fernando González have both returned permanently to Cuba in a great victory for justice-loving people all over the world. Gerardo, Ramón, and Antonio remain unjustly in U.S. jails facing sentences up to double-life plus 15 years.

¿QUIÉNES SON LOS CINCO HÉROES CUBANOS?
Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González y René González, tambén conocidos como los Cinco (the Cuban Five), son cinco hombres que fueron injustamente acusados y condenados en una Corte Federal de Estados Unidos de "conspiración para cometer espionaje" y otros cargos fabricados, siguiendo su arresto y encarcelamiento en 1998. Los Cinco eran realmente hombres desarmados que monitoreaban las organizaciones terroristas con sede en Miami, las que desde 1959 han sido responsables de la muerte de 3400 personas en Cuba, incluyendo un residente en Canadá, Fabio di Celmo, en 1997.
