Update on CASC Café Simpatico Zooms in 2021 from Terry

We had our last successful Zoom of 2021 with author-activist Yves Engler in early December.

In the past year when we could not meet in person, we have had excellent presentations on many topics. We showed the film “The Shadow of Gold”, a revealing survey of the devastation caused by gold mining and use. If you missed it see: https://www.tvo.org/video/documentaries/the-shadow-of-gold-ep-1

Other presentations with local and international speakers were on El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and coffee & climate change in Nicaragua.

We plan to continue with Zooms until it is safe to have Café Simpatico in Fernwood live again!

Yves Engler’s discussion on Canada’s military, based on his newest book, was a wide-ranging critique starting with the inherent sexism in a ‘toxic male’ world of the military followed by revelations of its racist and colonial roots.

He documents that the military produces more than 50% of the federal government’s carbon emissions and military environmental damage is exempt from all Climate Change commitments. And there is much more to learn from his carefully documented study; it is clear and easy to read. If you missed his Zoom, here is a link to the similar talk he gave in Duncan: " moz-do-not-send="true">

The book is a great read and an excellent resource. WE STAND ON GUARD FOR WHOM? is published by Black Rose Books in Montreal.

Coming up on Jan. 28, 2022 is a speaker from Peru on political change in her country Details later.
