All proposed blocks halted in Argonaut Creek

Hi Paov,

Two and a half years ago I first stood within the old-growth caribou habitat in Argonaut Creek about to be logged and I dreamed about stopping the chainsaws. After over two years of pressure, we did it.

All 14 of BC Timber Sale's cutblocks have been temporarily halted, deferring an area over 475 soccer fields in size in caribou habitat from logging. When I say we did it, that especially means you. Here’s a look back at our collective efforts to save caribou and their habitat in Argonaut Creek.

August 2020

Our investigation into Argonaut Creek exposed disastrous logging and road building plans. Upon return, we went to work getting media attention from GlobalTV to Narwhal, made a video, created maps and had supporters write over 3,000 letters telling elected officials to halt the blocks. December 2020

The BC government announced it would halt the logging of 11 of the 14 of its cutblocks. This left three still on the chopping block with one in caribou habitat. We kept the pressure on to stop remaining cutblocks and restore the road leading into caribou habitat. Photo credit: Casey Dubois Media and Echo Conservation

July 2021

Concerned locals from the Revylution group established a blockade to prevent further road building into caribou habitat. They successfully turned around the road building crew.

September 2021

We set out across BC to document all the incredible people working to protect caribou. We met with Kukpi7 Wayne Christian, chief of Splatsin First Nation who advocates for caribou recovery throughout his territory. And also stayed at the Revylution blockade and met some of the incredible people on the frontlines.

This month

BCTS announced it will remove all 14 of their blocks from Argonaut Creek, including all in caribou habitat — leaving this intact valley just as it is, a haven for caribou. Photo credit: Casey Dubois Media and Echo Conservation This is a BIG WIN and we could not have done it without you. Thank you.
