r1 World Wildlife Day is just around the corner ... DONATE NOW
Dear Paov,

Did you know March 3rd is World Wildlife Day? It is a day for us to think about the plants and animals that we share the planet with, and that make our way of life possible.

This year, we’re thinking in particular about marine wildlife. From coast-to-coast-to-coast, the oceans surrounding Canada are home to whales, sea otters, seabirds, sharks, fish, corals, seagrass, and countless other marine species. These species are integral to our way of life, providing sustenance, cultural and economic benefits, and inspiration.

But with ocean mismanagement and climate change, marine species are in a sea of trouble.
PROTECT MARINE WILDLIFE

Paov, only a small fraction of the ocean has been legally protected from damaging industrial activities. In addition to climate change and habitat destruction, commercial shipping and overfishing pose some of the greatest threats to the marine web of life.

For example, the southern resident killer whales suffer from the impacts of increased vessel traffic noise and reductions in Chinook salmon stocks – their primary prey.

There is an urgent need to protect marine areas to reduce pressure within important feeding areas for these whales and enable population recovery. This can be done through the creation of marine protected areas (MPAs), which are legally set aside for long-term conservation aims – like national parks but in the water.

With your help today, West Coast Environmental Law can proactively push for the creation of MPAs and the implementation of legal standards to protect marine mammals and all the marine life that we rely upon.
Establishing MPAs in the ocean is one of the most effective ways to safeguard marine biodiversity, and West Coast is working to ensure that the legal tools available to protect sensitive areas of the sea are used effectively to maintain healthy oceans and marine wildlife – and that these legal tools are strengthened.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE TODAY
Your donation today can help us achieve some of these goals through our vital marine programs centered around:
  • Marine protected areas, and specifically developing an MPA network in the Great Bear Sea
  • Creating a coastal marine strategy and law for British Columbia
  • Revitalizing Indigenous ocean laws
  • Protecting fish and wildlife through an ecosystem-based management approach
Paov, can we count on your support this World Wildlife Day to help us protect areas of the ocean to safeguard sea life from future harm?

Sincerely,

Erin Gray
