Healthy communities depend on a healthy climate

Dear Paov,

We have all been affected by the global fight against COVID-19 in some shape or form. We worked together to minimize the impacts by following public health guidelines, and life is finally starting to feel like it’s going back to normal (even as we advocate for “building back better” in an environmentally and socially just manner).

Today, on World Health Day, West Coast Environmental Law would like to talk with you about health from a climate change standpoint.

Last summer in 2021, nearly 600 people lost their lives in BC when temperatures hovered over 40°C for days. And just months later, BC experienced floods like we’ve never seen before – damaging vital infrastructure and uprooting thousands of people from their homes.

While all of us are touched by the climate crisis, it’s important to remember that it does not affect everyone equally. For instance, Indigenous communities are at far greater risk from climate impacts such as flooding and wildfires than most Canadian cities and towns.
DONATE TO SUPPORT CLIMATE LAW

DID YOU KNOW…

  • Scientists have calculated that the 2021 heat dome was 150 times more likely than it would have been without climate change.
  • More frequent and intense heat waves can cause increased heat stroke and deaths, as we saw in BC last year.
  • Extreme wildfires lead to harmful air pollution and increased stresses on healthcare facilities.
  • Those affected by fires, floods and extreme weather events often experience mental health impacts like anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Paov, a small donation today can help our climate law team to continue to work toward solutions – including calling on our governments to protect us from future heat waves, flooding, wildfires and other climate impacts, and take urgent action to phase out fossil fuels.

Your donation today can help us provide expert recommendations to strengthen Canada’s and BC’s climate policies and plans.
On this World Health Day, please consider making a small donation to help us continue to build strong environmental laws and policies to keep us safe from climate change.

Like we did with COVID-19, we must work together to tackle climate change as it continues to affect the social and environmental determinants of health, including clean air, secure shelter and safe drinking water and food.

We need to work towards building a future that will not let our lives – and our children’s lives – be defined by wildfires and smoke, heat domes, drought and flooding caused by fossil fuel pollution.

On behalf of everyone at West Coast Environmental Law, we wish you and your family good health today and everyday!

Kind regards,

Fiona Koza
