We are using the law to help. ...
DONATE NOW
Dear Paov,
Did you know that West Coast Environmental Law is one of the most long-standing environmental organizations in Canada?
Since the 1970s, our environmental lawyers, strategists, analysts and communicators have been at the forefront of establishing virtually every major progressive environmental law in British Columbia and federally.
As proud as we are of all our accomplishments in the past, the future is filled with uncertainty.
PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT TODAY
This past year alone, BC has witnessed the dangers of environmental degradation and a changing climate – and almost everyone living in the province was affected in some shape or form.
We watched raging wildfires burn down thousands of square kilometres of land and forests, and we saw highways and public infrastructure damaged by rainstorms that displaced nearly 15,000 people from their homes due to floods.
British Columbians are already feeling the impacts of the climate crisis. But climate change is just one of many interconnected environmental challenges that we are facing together today.
That’s why our team is working harder than ever – developing innovative legal solutions and advocating for strong laws and policies at all levels to protect land, air, water and communities.
LEAVE AN IMPACT
Some of our current priorities include:
- Leading the public conversation in BC about suing Big Oil and holding the fossil fuel industry legally accountable for paying its fair share of the climate change costs facing our communities;
- Collaborating on initiatives that support green infrastructure in our communities – including urban trees that keep cities cooler and improve air quality in hot summers, as well as the "Living Dike" concept aimed at establishing flood protection for communities while minimizing the loss of coastal ecosystems;
- Strengthening the legal safety net for oceans and marine ecosystems with new protection standards that prohibit harmful activities like oil extraction and dumping in federal marine protected areas (MPAs);
- Working alongside Indigenous partners to develop and implement projects grounded in their Indigenous laws through our RELAW (Revitalizing Indigenous Law for Land, Air & Water) program; and
- Providing accessible legal information and educational resources for communities – strengthening public understanding of environmental laws and policies, and why they matter.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE NOW Paov, we don’t know what new challenges the next season will bring.
With the escalating climate impacts we have faced in the last year, West Coast Environmental Law depends on the generosity of donors to ensure the right legal tools are in place to keep communities safe and protect the environment that will sustain us for generations to come.
Will you consider taking your support to the next level by making a donation today to help us continue some of this critical work we’re focusing on throughout this year?
With your help, we can lay the legal foundation for the world we know is possible.
With gratitude,
Jessica Clogg

We recognize that our readers are diverse and have unique experiences. Due to the impacts of systemic racism and colonialism, or a variety of other factors affecting financial well-being, some readers may not be able or inclined to make a monetary gift. We welcome your ongoing support and engagement with West Coast in whatever form you choose.
