We can all stand with Nuchatlaht

A court case is underway that will have massive implications for Indigenous rights and the environment in Canada.
The Nuchatlaht, a mighty First Nation on the west coast of Vancouver Island, have a rich and deep history on their lands and waters that goes back millennia. Their history of wealth and abundance ensured everyone had enough. People and the environment were taken care of and thrived together.
It’s that powerful vision that this Nation is seeking to make a reality once again, by regaining legal title to their territory on Nootka Island. But rather than supporting the Nuchatlaht, BC’s government is fighting against them.
Our latest report, Stand with Nuchatlaht, highlights this Nation’s deep connection and relationship with Nootka Island and their efforts to get their land back. The report also breaks down why respect for Indigenous rights and title is required for true environmental justice and why the environmental movement must champion the return of land to Indigenous Peoples.

Launched in 2017, the Nuchatlaht title case follows decades of attempts by the Nation to rein in industrial development on their territory and repair the damages wrought by decades of clearcut logging and overfishing. The main hearings happened last spring, and the final arguments begin later this month. A decision is expected in late 2022 or early 2023.All of us who care about the environment and climate are responsible for speaking up and supporting Indigenous Peoples striving to better care for lands and waters. Standing with the Nuchatlaht is a place to start.
Federal and provincial elected officials need to hear from us. Read the paper and then call on them to stop opposing the Nuchatlaht Nation. Demand the BC government stand down and honour their commitment to reconciliation. Ask Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step in when provinces like BC deny Indigenous land rights. And, if you’re able, support the Nuchatlaht Nation’s legal fund and help support their title case directly.
