Gerardo Alfonso will showcase the unique tradition of Cuba’s nueva trova (new troubador) style of music. Nueva Trova is similar to folk music, exploring social and political issues, and day-to-day humanity, society and life through song. Alfonso is the writer and performer of well-known ballads such as “Sabanas Blancas” and “El Revolver”, and has shared the stage with Pablo Milanés, Maria Bethania, Silvio Rodriguez, Santiago Feliu and others.

The tour will promote the 3rd International Cuba Solidarity meeting in Havana October 27 to 29th, 2014, and is cosponsored locally by our Victoria Friends of Cuba and the national Canadian Network on Cuba organization.

Sandra Ramírez, North American Specialist from the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) in Havana will accompany Gerardo and will speak about the upcoming International Solidarity event that will take place in Cuba next October.
