As a supporter, you may remember that this summer, West Coast Environmental Law launched the bold, people-powered campaign Sue Big Oil to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their role in the climate crisis and the resulting impacts in BC communities. HOLD POLLUTERS ACCOUNTABLE Not only is Big Oil a massive contributor to climate change – they have been misleading the public about their climate commitments by convincing us that they are taking action towards reducing their emissions.
Some of the largest oil and gas companies have been spending millions of dollars on marketing campaigns to downplay their role in the climate crisis while continuing to seek a long-term fossil fuel future.

"Fossil Fuel giants have captured governments and banks, extracting mega-profits while the world burns. It’s time to Sue Big Oil." — Avi Lewis This year alone, Big Oil has made record high profits. ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell and BP collectively earned a total of $50 billion between April-June this year – compared to $16.4 billion during the same period last year. Paov, Big Oil has been polluting the planet for decades. In Canada, many of us are just beginning to get a taste of climate change impact that communities all over the world have been contending with.

Lives are at stake – and preventative measures like fire management, dykes, sea walls and storm water systems could save lives in emergencies. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Canadian local governments need more than $5 billion each year to keep us safe from the impacts of a planet warmed by oil and gas pollution.
