Hi Paov,
I hope you enjoyed some time to rest over the holidays and were able to connect with loved ones. It’s the best time of year to enjoy a little peace and quiet.
But it’s also the time when polluting interests try to sneak some shady stuff by us.
Take Woodfibre LNG. This liquefied natural gas plant near Squamish, BC was approved in 2016 with the condition that it stop pile driving if marine mammals came close enough that the noise would disturb them. Finding that inconvenient, the company asked the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada to allow it to expose sea lions and seals to noise levels louder than a jet plane at take off. It also wants to limit its responsibility for water quality.
This could set a dangerous precedent for any project that finds itself looking to cut costs at the expense of the environment and wildlife. These unacceptable changes to Woodfibre’s conditions would hurt the Steller sea lions of Howe Sound, a species at risk in a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
