Hi Paov,
When you see a salmon-bearing creek run murky brown, it means critical spawning habitat and sometimes even eggs and young fry are being smothered. Earlier this month loose dirt from the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline poured into Ts'elkay Kwe, a vital wetland in Wet’suwet’en territory. From there it flowed into the Wedzin Kwa — the river hereditary chiefs and community members have fought so hard to protect.
We’re heartbroken for our friends who have long warned of this nightmare. But like them, we’re also so, so angry that this was allowed to happen. If you share those feelings can you let the provincial government know?
BC’s environmental assessment office (BCEAO) has issued a stop work order for the area, the sixth this spring, but the damage has largely been done. Failure to control erosion from the rapidly melting snowpack has caused havoc all over the pipeline route. It’s time for the provincial government to halt construction before any more salmon creeks are ruined.
