National Indigenous People's Day

Hi Paov,

Tomorrow, June 21, marks National Indigenous People’s Day in what’s known as Canada. The Wilderness Committee unequivocally supports the rights of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit people and communities, and we celebrate the incredible contributions of Indigenous people in all aspects of life across the lands we work on.

We also understand our responsibility to recognize and confront ongoing colonialism where we encounter it and to work hard to decolonize our views, approach and activism.

Performer with the ANSWER2 Drum Group by Desiree Wallace All land and waters in Canada are within the territory of a First Nation, Métis or Inuit people, and respecting this is a key component of speaking up for the environment. Our efforts to safeguard ecosystems and biodiversity and fight climate change must also champion Indigenous rights and centre solutions that uplift Indigenous people everywhere. On National Indigenous People’s Day, please take time to celebrate Indigenous people in your community and reflect on your responsibilities to advance decolonization.

Some steps you can take include

  • Learn more about whose territory you live and play on: the website native-land.ca overlays Indigenous territories onto a zoomable Google map, so you can learn which Nation’s land you live on. Have a favourite camp spot or summer getaway? Find out whose territory that is on too! After this, we encourage everyone to research whether these Nations have projects or initiatives that the public can support. Do what you can to give back to our hosts and show gratitude for their stewardship over the millennia.
  • Attend an event marking National Indigenous People’s Day. On June 21, dozens of public events are happening across the country. Search “National Indigenous People’s Day” and your community to find one near you.
  • Celebrate Indigenous art. Check out this playlist of tracks from just a few of the incredible First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists in Canada, compiled by our Digital Communications Specialist Annie Bhuiyan.
We hope your summer is off to a good start. Please take some time this week to reflect on ways to better support First Nations, Inuit and Métis people and communities as we work towards a better future for all.
