Donate today! Dear Paov,
For Indigenous History Month, we’re shining a light on the power of Indigenous law in environmental decision-making. West Coast is fortunate to work alongside Indigenous partners who are revitalizing and applying their laws, building environmental solutions that benefit all.
For example, in the Lower Fraser River region, Indigenous laws and knowledge are being applied in innovative and collaborative ways – from helping sustain fish and their habitat, to planning for climate resilience. Read on to learn more.
This spring, the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance (LFFA) and RELAW
(Revitalizing Indigenous Law for Land, Air & Water) brought young people and Guardians from Lower Fraser First Nations together to discuss the importance of Indigenous law and fisheries governance – looking seven generations into the future.
On June 9, leaders from First Nations, local, provincial and federal governments and agencies, farm associations and stakeholders came together to lay the groundwork for an action plan for flood management and long-term resilience in the Lower Fraser region.
On Friday, Transport Canada announced new mandatory measures to address cruise ship pollution. It’s a positive step for ocean health – though more action is needed to address potential loopholes and deal with scrubber washwater (the biggest source of pollution).
On June 6th, the Township of View Royal, just outside of Victoria, boldly voted to join other local governments in a class action lawsuit against global fossil fuel companies, demanding a fair share of municipal climate change costs. Get all the details on View Royal's ground-breaking decision here.
In case you missed it, West Coast’s Guide to Marine Conservation Law in BC is now available via UBC Press, in both hardcover and open-access PDF editions. Check it out.
