CGL’s security are overstepping any authority the injunction may grant and are increasingly infringing on our (Wet’suwet’en and our guests) right to privacy and aboriginal rights by impeding our free movement for cultural activities on our territory.
One night at 4 am, CGL’s security guards across the bridge blocked traffic to our healing centre and interrogated female guests about their identity and destination. Another time, they stopped and questioned a wood harvester hired to gather firewood. They follow guests, sometimes tailgating them, on the forest service road, usually women driving alone or in pairs, at a distance unsafe on city streets let alone a gravel road after spring melt.
Another harassment incident occurred when a group of CGL security guards kettled our truck and trailer driver, preventing his exit and mocking him. Our skid steer operator then asked them to move and was in turn harassed by security recording him while he waited for the driver to return.
On multiple occasions, Unist’ot’en members have been followed while performing cultural activities nowhere near the “CGL right of way”. When approached and asked for his grounds for following us when we were clearly far from CGL worksites, he shared that he was instructed to “follow all non-industry traffic”.
CGL is infringing on Wet’suwet’en rights. All of this behavior is abhorrent and unacceptable, and we demand that CGL respect our right to safety, peace, privacy, and respect our rights on our territory.
CGL’s hired surveillance squad are behaving like school bullies on a playground. Feel free to call their parents or the principal in their offices and let them know that this kind of acting out has consequences.
With all our hearts and gratitude,
Unist’ot’en Village and Healing Centre.
