Bike to Work Week is one month away! This year’s 20th anniversary celebrations begin, May 25th and run through June 1st. We’ll be hosting lots of great events on campus and even bigger and better draw prizes for participants. UVic researchers are being rewarded for doing amazing sustainability research. Engineer Afzal Suleman is now a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Computational and Experimental Mathematics and is using advanced computational tools to develop state-of-the-art environmentally and economically efficient aircraft. Oceanographer Roberta Hamme is now a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Ocean Carbon Dynamics who is researching where carbon goes in the ocean and why. See The Ring. Ethnoecologist Nancy Turner will receive an honorary degree from the University of Northern BC for her ground-breaking work with Indigenous peoples in Western Canada. See PGCitizen.

Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Andrew Weaver is the only BC MLA granted “intervener status” on the proposed Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project’s upcoming National Energy Board hearings. He is inviting constituents and others from around the province to send him comments and questions. See his website for more info. Many people, including Chris Tollefson from UVic’s Environmental Law Centre, are voicing concerns that none of the 400 people granted intervener status will be given the opportunity to orally cross-examine the company. UVic-led Pacific Institute for Climate Change has launched a weekly newsletter specially targeted at policy-makers and media who need more in-depth analysis of issues that lead to the development of low-carbon economy in BC. See media tip for more info.

PEOPLE'S PADDLE TO PROECT THE SALISH SEA
May 3rd, 1 to 3 PM, Willow's Beach (near Cattle Point), Oak Bay
A picnic and paddle to raise awareness about threats to the coast including pipelines and increased supertanker traffic. See website for more info.

UVIC ANNUAL PLANT SALE
May 4th, 11 AM to 2 PM, Entrance to Finnerty Gardens, Lot 6
New location this year, and smaller with great selection of rhododendrons and other perennials and select plants. Proceeds support Friends of Finnerty Gardens. See website for more info.

SAVE ISLAND RAIL
May 9th, 7 PM, Ambrosia Event Centre, 638 Fisgard St
Town Hall event to discuss the crisis facing Canada's rail system, and what can be done to save Vancouver Island passenger rail. See Facebook for details.

DEFEND OUR CLIMATE: MARCH FOR AN OIL-FREE COAST
May 10th, 12:30 PM, Beacon Hill Park
