PRESS RELEASE
‘COMPLIANCE COAL ISSUED COAL LICENSE IN THE TSOLUM RIVER WATERSHED”
The CoalWatch Comox Valley Society has uncovered information that
indicates the BC Government has issued a coal license to Compliance
Coal Corporation for a coal tenure in the Anderson Lake area, with
part of the tenure in the sensitive Tsolum River watershed.
The BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Natural Gas (MoEMNG) issued the
coal license on May 5, 2014, with the tenure being 1448 hectares in
size. The issuance of this coal license to Compliance increases their
coal tenure in the Comox Valley to over 30,000 hectares, which
includes the proposed Raven Coal Mine near Fanny Bay, and the Bear
Coal Deposit above Cumberland.
“ CoalWatch is very disappointed the BC Govt issued this coal license
in a sensitive watershed area, while seemingly disregarding the
request by the Comox... Valley Regional District that this coal license
not be issued,” said CoalWatch president John Snyder.
“ While Compliance is actively pursuing it’s Raven Coal Mine Project
and eyeing future development on the Bear Coal Deposit, this is
certainly the first step on the slippery slope of future exploration
and coal mine development in other areas of the Comox Valley,” added
Snyder. “ The fact that Compliance has included portions of the Tsolum
River watershed for it’s coal license should serve as a wakeup call
for us all.”
