Music, March & Rally for an Oil-Free Coast: This Saturday!

Defend our climate May 10!

With the federal decision on the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and tankers looming in June, and hundreds denied participation in the review process for Kinder Morgan’s new pipeline and tankers, the time is now for British Columbians to raise our voices against these dangerous projects and demand alternatives.

The federal government has been changing laws to push risky pipelines and tankers on an unwilling province, Enbridge omitted islands from a map of the Great Bear Rainforest to try and win us over, and Kinder Morgan has claimed that oil spills would be good for our communities. We can do better than this.

Join Sierra Club BC in Victoria this Saturday, May 10, for Defend Our Climate, March for an Oil-free Coast, a rally against pipeline and tanker projects that threaten B.C.'s coast with oil spills that would further accelerate climate change.

It will be a fun, family-friendly day beginning with music, spoken word poetry, and face painting in Beacon Hill Park at the bandshell, followed by a march to the legislature and a rally.

After the rally, we're inviting everyone to come to James Bay Community School Centre and join the discussion, to build connections in our community, learn more about these issues, and plan next steps.

12:30 p.m. - music at Beacon Hill Park bandshell
1:45 p.m. - march from Beacon Hill bandshell to B.C. Legislature building
2:30 p.m. - rally at B.C. Legislature
3:30 p.m. - discussions at James Bay Community School Centre (140 Oswego) (with food!)

Bring your family, invite your friends and neighbours! Together we can promote a positive vision for B.C. and Canada. We can choose renewable energy and a low-carbon economy that will sustain jobs and families long into the future. We can build a society that respects indigenous rights, believes in jobs with fair wages, and protects a beautiful coast that continues to draw tourists and sustain communities.

All across the country, communities will be rallying for the "Defend our Climate, Defend our Communities" National Day of Action. Climate change impacts are here and Canadians are calling on all levels of government to transition away from fossil fuel dependence and towards a green energy future.

See you there on Saturday,
