“When we were imprisoned 15 years
ago, our captors never imagined that from all corners of the world
people like you would take up our cause. Instead of suffering defeat
we have become stronger. During this time we have suffered hardships
and lost people close to us. But our spirits never broke, because we
knew we could count on people from all over the world like you. Your
solidarity and sense of justice has kept us and our families strong”
~ René González, Cuban 5 Hero
Hello to all friends and supporters of
justice in Victoria!
I am writing this email with a very
special request for your help. The Free the Cuban 5 Committee –
Vancouver is very glad to announce that one of the most important
international events in the campaign for the freedom of all the Cuban
5 Heroes is scheduled to take place again this year... in less than just
one month. “5 Days for the Cuban 5” will be taking place in
Washington DC from June 4-11th 2014. Hundreds of delegates
from all over the world will come together to organize events and
actions in Washington, including conferences, outreach campaigns,
lobbying Congress representatives and rallying in front of the White
House to demand “Obama Yes You Can, Free ALL the Cuban 5!”
One of the Cuban 5 heroes, Rene
Gonzalez has written to the Free the Cuban 5 Committee – Vancouver
emphasizing the importance of the need to have as big a number of
people in Washington as possible this year. As the legal avenues for
the Cuban 5 are almost exhausted, we need to strengthen the
international campaign for their freedom and make the loudest noise
possible for our 5 heroes in Washington DC.
The Free the Cuban 5 Committee –
Vancouver is committed to send as many people as possible from
Vancouver and British Columbia to participate in these important
actions. We will be sending at least 15 people from BC to attend, and
I would like to ask you to please consider making a donation to help
the B.C. Delegation get to Washington. Every contribution small or
large will greatly help and we are relying on your support to make
this campaign for our 5 Heroes a success. Our goal is to raise $7,000
for expenses regarding plane tickets and accommodation. We have
already collected $4,800 from generous donations so far. With this
money we have been able to purchase 10 flights for 10 people, and we
are trying to send 5 – 7 more people to Washington DC. Every little
bit will greatly help!
There are three ways that you can
donate to this campaign. The first, is that I can travel to Victoria
on Monday May 26 and Tuesday May 27 and I am available to collect
donations during this time. My phone number is 604.715.8070 and you
can call me anytime between now and then, tell me your donation, and
I can arrange it up from you at your home or work. You can also email
me at

WHO ARE THE 5 CUBAN HEROES?
Gerardo Hernández, Ramón
Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González,
also known as the Cuban 5, are five men who were wrongly accused and
convicted in a U.S. Federal Court of “conspiracy to commit
espionage” and other fabricated charges, following their arrest and
imprisonment in 1998. The 5 were actually unarmed men involved in
monitoring Miami-based terrorist organizations, which since 1959 have
been responsible for the deaths of over 3,400 people in Cuba,
including one resident of Canada, Fabio di Celmo, in 1997. Through
their important work, these 5 men were able to prevent further deaths
in Cuba. As of March, 2014 René González and Fernando González
have both returned permanently to Cuba in a great victory for
justice-loving people all over the world. Gerardo, Ramón, and
Antonio remain unjustly in U.S. jails facing sentences up to
double-life plus 15 years.
