Hello RAVENers!

We hope you are having a lovely start to your summer! We’d love to update you on our big move, progress on the website and some of our programs!
1) We’ve moved! With 1 small office 2 desks and 3 staff members, our RAVEN nest was getting a little cozy! So we are now located in Victoria’s historic Central Building – also humbly known as the Save The World building – because so many non-profits are located within. If you need to mail us, or feel like dropping by we are at
Suite 303, 620 View Street, Victoria, BC, V8W 1J6. Our phone number is the same at
250.383.2331.
2) Big things are happening on our world wide web! First, we are working on a new website and have seen a draft by our amazing design team Christopher Roy and Natasha Kong at Marketworks Media, Inc. based out of Salt Spring. It’s looking great and we’ll let you know when we will be rolling it out.
Here are some other updates to our current and upcoming website:
Methods of donation: Reminder that we have PayPal and Canada Helps to ensure ease of donating. Both have unique benefits and donors are welcome to use which ever they wish.
RAVEN Online Store: We will not be continuing the RAVEN store on our future website as it is a very complicated task to administer. BUT…we will still have our t-shirts, water bottles, pens, and pins for sale after our website change! We love our logo and so do our RAVENers! So if you’d like to purchase something, please just send us an email at

5) Young Scholar’s Essay Prize: The deadline for our
Young Scholar’s Essay Prize was yesterday. We received 14 entries! The adjudicating committee, as headed by our amazing YSEP Coordinator Max Ritts will be making their very tough decision about the 1st and 2nd prize winner and we will announce the winners at the end of June!
6) Tsilhqot’in vs Taseko Mines – The Federal Court has granted the order that requested adding the Tsilhqot’in National Government and Chief Joe Alphonse as respondents to the second judicial review. They are now officially parties in both proceedings, so they will need
all the help they can get. Please consider
donating to this important legal effort.
The first judicial review is scheduled for
October 29 – November 5. The dates are subject to change. No word on whether they will be heard together. Canada is bringing a motion to have them heard one after the other by the same judge, but Taseko Mines Limited is opposing, and it still needs to be argued sometime over the next few weeks.
The first judicial review, filed in November 2013, targets the independent panel and its report, and alleges that the panel’s review process was “unfair” to the company. The company launched a second lawsuit in March this year, this time asking the Federal Court to overturn the Federal Government’s rejection of New Prosperity.
Note: this second lawsuit is far more sweeping – and very troubling for the future of environmental protection in Canada. In this second lawsuit, Taseko Mines Limited argues that this protection is unconstitutional and that the Federal Government cannot lawfully prevent a project from proceeding. It argues that only the Province can make this decision. If the company is successful, this would mean that this project – and others – could still proceed despite scathing federal environmental assessments and rejection by the Federal Government.
After two rejections of its Project, the company is now directly attacking the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (“CEAA 2012”) and attempting to dismantle what remains of environmental protection in Canada.

From all of us at RAVEN, from our (new!) nest to yours, have a great June and keep in touch!
warmly,
