BORDER UPDATE – July 6, 2014 8:00pm ** Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba Successfully Crosses from BC, Canada into Washington, US **
Over 90 supporters gathered at Peace Arch Park today, Sunday July 6, to send off the 25th Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba. Supporters came from across British Columbia and Washington State to make sure all of the humanitarian aid collected in British Columbia would make it across the border and on its way to Cuba.
After a picnic and cultural/political program that we will report more about soon, the truck and car full of about $10,000 worth of humanitarian aid, including walkers, wheelchairs, medical supplies, sports equipment, school supplies and tools made their first attempt to cross over the border in the afternoon. With all of the caravan supporters chanting against the blockade of Cuba, holding signs, waving flags and handing out leaflets to those waiting in traffic, the US border crossing was alive with the dynamic campaign demanding an end... to the US government’s illegal and immoral blockade against Cuba.
However, even with this sign of strength the Peace Arch Border officials turned the aid away, in other words rejected the aid, claiming it was "of a commercial quantity" and thus needed to go through the Commercial/Truck Crossing. Caravan supporters were resolute so the protest moved about 5km down the road to the Commercial/Truck Crossing, where again the signs were held high, the voices and chanting were loud and the truck and car made their second attempt to cross the border with the humanitarian aid destined for Cuba.
The vehicles were x-rayed and many questions were asked, but after some delays the US border officials had no choice, first, because they could not find any legal justification and second, because it was clear that they were under the tremendous pressure of the loud protest at the border. Activists who were driving the aid across the border reported from within the inspection building that the border guards were intensely monitoring the protesters on their closed-circuit security TV. It was clear from this that the protest had become a big concern for them. Our militant and determined voices could be heard from blocks away, as well as many cars honking in support as they crossed through the border. It was only after 7 hours of chanting and protest that the US border guards finally were forced to relent and allow all of the aid into the US so it can travel with the Caravan on its way to Cuba! This victory brought back the feeling of two years ago, when the same border agency refused to let the humanitarian aid pass, but after 24 hours of protest were forced to let it through.
This was a great victory that has set the tone for the rest of the Caravan which will face another test on its way to Cuba when it passes through the US/Mexico border on July 23.
We must be alert and ready to defend this Caravan and its precious cargo for Cuba: Caravanistas who will travel from the US in defiance of the US government travel ban and humanitarian aid which the US government tries to blockade from Cuba.

UNITED WE WILL WIN! LIFT THE BLOCKADE ON CUBA! VIVA CUBA!

¡UNA GRAN VICTORIA! ACTUALIZACIÓN DE LA FRONTERA—6 DE Julio de 2014, 8:00pm ** La Caravana a Cuba de Pastores por la Paz cruza exitosamente desde Columbia Británica, Canadá, a Washington, Estados Unidos**
Más de 90 simpatizantes se reunieron en el Peace Arch Park (Parque del Arco de Triunfo) hoy, 6 de julio, para despedir a la 25ta Caravana a Cuba de Pastores por la Paz. Los simpatizantes vinieron de toda Columbia Británica y el estado de Washington para asegurarse de que toda la ayuda humanitaria recaudada en Columbia Británica pasara la frontera camino a Cuba.
Después de un picnic y un programa político-cultural sobre el que reportaremos más adelante, la camioneta y el auto llenos de más de 10 mil dólares en ayuda humanitaria incluyendo andadores, sillas de ruedas, implementos deportivos, material escolar y herramientas hicieron su primer intento de cruzar la frontera en la tarde. Con todos los simpatizantes de la caravana cantando en contra del bloqueo a Cuba, portando carteles, ondeando banderas, repartiendo panfletos a quienes esperaban en el tráfico, el cruce de la frontera con Estados Unidos estuvo vivo con la dinámica campaña demandando el fin del inmoral e ilegal bloqueo del gobierno norteamericano contra Cuba.
Sin embargo, incluso con esta muestra de fortaleza, los oficiales fronterizos el Peace Arch enviaron la ayuda de vuelta, en otras palabras, la rechazaron, alegando que era “de una cantidad comercial” y que por lo tanto debía pasar por el Cruce Comercial de Camiones. Los simpatizantes de la caravana estaban resueltos, así que la protesta se movió alrededor de 5km por toda la carretera hasta el Cruce Comercial de Camiones, donde nuevamente se levantaron los carteles y aumentó el volumen de las voces y los cantos mientras la camioneta y el auto con la ayuda hacia Cuba hacía su segundo intento de cruzar la frontera.
Los vehículos fueron pasados por rayos X y se hicieron varias preguntas, pero luego de algunas demoras, los oficiales de la frontera con Estados Unidos no tuvieron otra salida, primero porque no pudieron encontrar ninguna justificación legal y según do porque era claro que estaban bajo la tremenda presión de la ruidosa protesta en la frontera. Los activistas que llevaban la ayuda a través de la frontera reportaron desde dentro del edificio de inspecciones que los guardias fronterizos estaban vigilando con intensidad a los manifestantes a través de los monitores de seguridad del circuito cerrado. Esto dejó claro que la protesta se había tornado en una gran preocupación para ellos. Nuestras resueltas voces militantes podían escucharse desde varias cuadras, al igual que muchos autos sonando sus cláxones en apoyo mientras cruzaban la frontera. ¡Fue exactamente luego de siete horas de cantos y protestas que los guardias de la frontera con Estados Unidos finalmente se vieron obligados a ceder y permitir que la ayuda entrara en suelo norteamericano para que pueda viajar con la Caravana hasta Cuba! Esta victoria nos recordó el sentimiento de hace dos años, cuando la misma agencia fronteriza se negó a permitir que pasara la ayuda humanitaria, pero luego de 24 horas de protestas se vieron obligados a dejarles pasar.
Esta fue otra gran victoria que ha marcado el ritmo para el resto de la Caravana, que enfrentará otra prueba camino a Cuba cuando tengan que pasar por el cruce Estados Unidos-México el 23 de julio.
Debemos estar alertas y preparados para defender esta Caravana y su preciada carga para Cuba: los Caravanistas, que viajarán desde los Estados Unidos en desafío a la prohibición de viajes, y la ayuda humanitaria, que el gobierno norteamericano trata de bloquearle a Cuba.
