The 2015 federal election is just around the corner and we need your help to finalize a plan to hold this government accountable and make major progress on the issues our community cares about: democratic reform, economic inequality and climate action.
Time and again, the Leadnow community has voted to support cooperation between the NDP, Liberals and Greens to defeat Conservative incumbents in the next election, elect a Parliament that better represent a majority of people in Canada, and then work together across party lines to pass crucial reforms.[1]
What do you think about cooperation between voters to achieve the same goal? We know that the idea of “strategic voting” to defeat the Conservatives has both serious advantages and real challenges - and we want your input.
If we told you, just before the election, that a candidate from a different party other than your first choice had the best chance of defeating the Conservative in your riding, would you be willing to shift your vote?
1. YES
2. NO
3. YES, under the right conditions
Do you have additional thoughts to share on why you may or may not switch your vote, or more broadly on the wisdom of this strategy? Don’t worry, there will be space for you to share your thoughts after making your selection.
In the last federal election, our broken first-past-the-post electoral system made it possible for Harper’s Conservatives to win 100% of the power in Parliament with just 39% of the votes. In the next federal election, voters could elect a Parliament that better represented a majority, but we’d need to work together across the country.
If we told you, just before the election, that a candidate from a different party other than your first choice had the best chance of defeating the Conservative in your riding, would you be willing to shift your vote?

[1] - The Leadnow community first voted to support cooperation for electoral reform during the NDP leadership race in 2012. During that leadership race, and the Liberal leadership race that followed a year later, tens of thousands joined to vote for candidates who supported cooperation for electoral reform. By joining the race, the Leadnow community helped the candidates who supported cooperation, Nathan Cullen and Joyce Murray, do much better than expected, showing the parties and media that people will get involved and vote for the cooperation. You also secured stronger commitments to electoral reform from the candidates who won those races, Thomas Mulcair and Justin Trudeau.
Now, as we prepare for the major push to the 2015 election, we want to know what you think of voters cooperating to defeat Conservative incumbents and support reforms for our democracy, economy and climate.
