Did you know that the Campus Community Garden is now home to its very own apiary? The honeybee colonies, installed in the spring, provide numerous benefits to the community and the surrounding environment by creating an opportunity for university and elementary classes to deepen their understanding of bees, as well as boosting the vitality of the community garden and surrounding areas through increased pollination. Read about it in the Victoria News article.

A recent provincial government air pollution study for BC’s Northwest Coast concluded that the proposed expansion of BC’s LNG and smelter industries is safe for human health and the environment. However, the study only looked at two polluting gases that typically effect asthma and acid rain and failed to account for impacts of increased greenhouse gases associated with the LNG industry, which could cause BC’s emissions profile to double in size. Read about it in the Vancouver Observer.

Meanwhile, UVic’s Environmental Law Centre continues to push the province for improved standards related to the disposal of waste water from natural gas fracking developments that fall well behind those in Europe and the US. See Vancouver Sun.

Tales from the Tide Pool is a new column written by UVic’s Ocean Networks Canada’s Natasha Ewing about our local ocean ecosystems. See the Oak Bay News.

BC Transit reports that ridership in the Victoria region is up by 5.5% over last year and costs have fallen. See Times Colonist. Watch for more service improvements coming to UVic in 2014/2015 as the result of the newly expanded transit exchange due for completion in September.

The Ancient Forest Alliance is looking for dedicated volunteers to help construct the boardwalk into Avatar Grove on the weekends of July 26/27 and August 23/24 in Port Renfrew, BC. If you are in good physical condition and able to follow instructions carefully, this is a fantastic opportunity to help make Avatar’s incredible old-growth forests more accessible.
