Dear Friends of SJS,
Social Justice Studies is co-sponsoring a conference on family and child poverty entitled From Charity to Social Justice: Addressing Child and Family Poverty on the evening of Thursday, October 2nd and during the day on Friday, October 3rd. The conference is free and open to the public, but you are encouraged to register ahead of time so that we are sure that we have enough lunch, refreshments and handouts for everyone (see the attached poster).
Also, the SJS Annual Lecture will take place on October 27th at 7:00 p.m. We are really excited to announce that our guest speaker will be Harsha Walia. The poster will be available shortly. Please keep the evening open.
We are also co-sponsoring visits to campus by political scientist, women's studies and feminist scholar Kathy Ferguson (University of Hawaii) on Friday. November 7th, and activist, writer and educator Chris Dixon... in late October. Further details to follow shortly.

Salmon Confidential is a new film on the government cover up of what is killing BC’s wild salmon. When biologist Alexandra Morton discovers BC’s wild salmon are testing positive for dangerous European salmon viruses associated with salmon farming worldwide, a chain of events is set off by government to suppress the findings. Tracking viruses, Morton moves from courtrooms, into British Columbia’s most remote rivers, Vancouver grocery stores and sushi restaurants. The film documents Morton’s journey as she attempts to overcome government and industry roadblocks thrown in her path and works to bring critical information to the public in time to save BC’s wild salmon. The film provides surprising insight into the inner workings of government agencies, as well as rare footage of the bureaucrats tasked with managing our fish and the safety of our food supply.
