Comment today to protect BC’s provincial parks!

Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area (Tuchodi)

Dear PAOV,

Did you know there are just four days left to keep oil and gas giant Kinder Morgan out of BC’s parks?

Kinder Morgan wants to go through four BC parks in order to construct its massive Trans Mountain pipeline project, and we need to make sure that doesn’t happen.

This morning the Wilderness Committee, together with three other environmental organizations, notified the BC government that the park use permit issued to Kinder Morgan for research is likely unlawful and should be revoked immediately. You can read our letter here.

Before Bill 4, the Park Amendment Act, was made into law in March of this year, park use permits could only be granted if the Minister deemed it was necessary to preserve or maintain the recreation value of the park involved. Now companies can legally conduct invasive research in Class A parks and then turn around and request that land be removed from park boundaries for pipelines, logging roads or transmission lines.

It is very important to note that the park use permit that allowed Kinder Morgan to conduct “invasive” research was granted in November 2013 – almost five months before Bill 4 was made into law. That’s why we believe it was unlawfully issued.

Bill 4 was passed with no public consultation, but now we have the opportunity to speak up and have our voices heard. BC Parks is currently accepting public comments on Kinder Morgan’s proposal to adjust provincial park boundaries, and the deadline is coming up this Sunday, October 12th.

Please join us and thousands of other British Columbians in standing up for our parks.
