NEWS:
The tale of Mount Polley continues. According to a Vancouver Sun report last week, “the BC Information and Privacy Commissioner has agreed to investigate a second complaint [originating from the UVic Environmental Law Centre] that the B.C. government is illegally holding back documents related to the Mount Polley mine tailings dam collapse.” The Sun also noted that “the spill significantly damaged nine-kilometre-long Hazeltine Creek,” and the damage to Quesnel Lake is still unclear. The Professional Employees Association, one of the staff unions here at UVic, is suggesting that a major reasons for this incident are the cuts the number of licensed professional overseeing mining operations. The PEA suggests that their “Endangered Experts” could have prevented the watershed damage.
