Sorry for so many emails today but especially this one is very important.
Hello to all,
This is from Harry Berbrayer in Duncan.
A remarkable human being, Jeff Halper, co-founder and head of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, ICAHD, will be speaking at the Duncan campus of Vancouver Island University on Wednesday, February 11, from 10:30 a.m. to noonish (it may run to 12:30). Helene Demers, professor of Anthropology, will have Jeff as guest speaker for her class, but the talk and subsequent discussion is open to all and free of charge. It's booked for Room 220, but will be moved to a larger space if necessary.Please do email me to let me know if you're likely to attend, as I want to give Helene an idea of approximate numbers.
I first met Jeff in Jerusalem in the autumn of 1998. My wife Rosemary and I attended a talk of his, and the...
next day made our first trip, with Jeff and others, to the occupied West Bank to see the effects of home demolitions and damage to Palestinian olive groves. Jeff, originally from Hibbing, Minnesota (birthplace of Bob Dylan), was for years an Anthropology professor in Israel, focussing on the Bedouins and their mistreatment by the Israeli state. In 1997 he co-founded ICAHD. Jeff is concerned with much more than the wilful Israeli destruction of many thousands of Palestinians' homes; he and ICAHD are relentlessly dedicated to ending the Israeli military occupation and to promoting justice and self-determination for and with Palestinians. In 2008 Jeff was onboard the first ships that attempted to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, and actually made it onshore into Gaza; he was arrested by Israel on leaving. Jeff is a great and lively speaker!
For your information, Jeff will also be speaking in BC in:
Surrey, on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m., at Northwood United Church, 8855-156th St., at 88th Ave.;
Nanaimo, on Wed. Feb. 11 at 2 p.m, at Harbourfront branch of Vancouver Island Regional Library, 90 Commercial St., off Diana Krall Plaza;
Courtenay, on Wed. Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., Stan Hagen Theatre of North Island College, 2300 Ryan Road.
All talks are free of charge, although donations are welcome.
Israel's policies and practices against Palestinians continue and worsen, and the situation in the Gaza Strip remains particularly bad. UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) USA, at unrwausa.org, reports today of a worsening emergency, with people in Gaza literally freezing to death, approximately 18,000 still sheltering in UNRWA schools, and thousands of others in makeshift shelters without roofs, insulation, or electricity.
