Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is bringing renowned Israeli human rights journalist Gideon Levy to Victoria to speak on Saturday, March 28th, at 7pm, in the David Lam Auditorium, at the University of Victoria.

Mr. Levy's lecture in Victoria is co-sponsored by the Department of Writing, University of Victoria.

Mr. Levy's talk in Victoria is part of his Canadian tour, March 22-29, which includes speeches in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver, as well as Victoria.

Levy, a journalist with Haaretz since 1982, and currently on its editorial board, will talk about the Palestine-Israel conflict in light of the March 17 Israeli elections in his talk entitled: "Israeli Elections: What next for Israel-Palestine?" Levy is a strong critic of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians and a strong supporter of the boycott of Israel. Levy has also questioned the viability of the “two-state solution". The British newspaper, The Independent, called Levy "the most hated man in Israel" because for 30 years, he has reported on Israel's human rights abuses in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza. Levy has won journalism awards, including the Emil Grunzweig Human Rights Award in 1996 by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, the Anna Lindh foundation journalism award in 2008 for an article he wrote about Palestinian children killed by Israeli forces, and the Peace Through Media Award in 2012. He has been described as "a powerful liberal voice" by The New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman and praised by Johann Hari of The Independent as "the heroic Israeli journalist". Literary critic Nicholas Lezard described him as "an Israeli dedicated to saving his country's honour", and he has also been profiled in Le Monde and Der Spiegel. Mr. Levy made international news in December when he was detained for a day or two by Israeli security forces as he was crossing between the West Bank and Israel.

Mr. Levy is also the author of two books available in Canada: Twilight Zone – Life and Death under the Israeli Occupation. 1988–2003 (2004) and The Punishment of Gaza (2010). Levy was the recipient of the Euro-Med Journalist Prize in 2008, the Leipzig Freedom Prize in 2001, the Israeli Journalists’ Union Prize in 1997, and The Association of Human Rights in Israel Award for 1996.
