In 2009, the first coup d'etat in a generation in Central America overthrows the elected president of Honduras. A nation-wide movement, known simply as The Resistance, rises in opposition. Resistencia: The Fight for the Aguan Valley centers on the most daring wing of the movement, the farmers of the Aguan. Not satisfied with just marching and blocking highways, 2000 landless families take possession of the palm oil plantations of Miguel Facusse, the country's largest landowner and a key player in the coup. The camera follows three farmers over four years as they build their new communities on occupied land, in the face of the regime's violent response, while waiting... for the elections The Resistance hopes will restore the national democratic project.Social Justice Film Night is on the 3rd Thursday of every month.

Forty years ago today, a remarkable organization was brought to life through the passion, dedication, and commitment of Elizabeth B. Silverstein, Stanley W. Hosie, and Alan Ditchik. Together they founded the South Pacific Peoples Foundation (SPPF) on April 8th, 1975. SPPF, now the Pacific Peoples’ Partnership (PPP), is the only organization in Canada devoted to the South Pacific. Throughout the years, we have engaged with local, national, and international networks by building partnerships across the Pacific and beyond, and caring for these relationships in times of turmoil and tranquility; of loss and celebration.
The very first issue of our beloved newsletter Tok Blong Pasifik, was printed in the Spring of 1982, to “…increase Canadian awareness of the island nations and peoples of the South Pacific, and stimulate a greater appreciation of the needs, desires, and realities of our Pacific neighbours” (Tok Blong SPPF, 1982). A cut-and-paste collection of articles, letters, and poetry, Xeroxed and bound together by a single staple, this first issue is symbolic of the rich history of PPP, the dedication that has been with us from the very beginning, and of just how far we have come.
Although we are fuelled by the same passion, dedication, and commitment to the South Pacific that inspired our founders so many years ago, there are some aspects of our work that have changed a great deal. In an era of touch screens, texting, and Twitter; of globally digitized communication and instantaneous knowledge-sharing, we rely more and more on the internet and social media to create awareness and engage the communities that surround us. Our website (http://pacificpeoplespartnership.org/) has become an invaluable communication tool, and our social media presence is ever-growing. None of the work we have done, since the very beginning, would have been possible without your support, encouragement, and kindness.
