The City Talks

Spring 2015: Racism, Memory, and Politics in the European City

Sponsored by the UVic Committee for Urban Studies and the European Union Centre of Excellence

How Can the European Left Deal with the Threat Posed by Xenophobia?

Glyn Ford

Steering Committee of Unite Against Fascism and former member of the European Parliament

Thursday, April 16,... 2015

Legacy Art Gallery & Cafe, 630 Yates Street

Doors Open at 7:00pm

Lecture Begins at 7:30pm

Abstract

There is a rising tide of Racism and Xenophobia sweeping across the EU, whose electoral face range across from the Fascist Right (Golden Dawn) and Fascist ‘Lite’ (Le Pen’s Front National) onto the Right Populists of Britain’s UKIP. Its public face is mainly, but not exclusively, urban as the horrors of terrorist attacks are utilised to promote Islamophobia, spiralling on to anti-semitism and the promotion of racial and religious hatred. Who are these people, who supports them and how can they be combatted?

Glyn Ford was a Labour Member of the European Parliament (1984-2009) who Chaired the EP’s Committee of Inquiry into the Growth of Racism and Fascism in Europe, the Rapporteur for the 2nd Committee of Inquiry into Racism and Xenophobia and served as the EP’s representative on the Council of Ministers Consultative Committee into Racism and Xenophobia. He was National Treasurer of the Anti-Nazi League and is a member of the Steering Committee of Unite Against Fascism and their European Officer.

This is a free public event at the Legacy Art Gallery ~ 630 Yates Street

Admission by DonationJesse Freeston will be connected through Skype with the audience at the end of the film.
In 2009, the first coup d'etat in a generation in Central America overthrows the elected president of Honduras. A nation-wide movement, known simply as The Resistance, rises in opposition. Resistencia: The Fight for the Aguan Valley centers on the most daring wing of the movement, the farmers of the Aguan. Not satisfied with just marching and blocking highways, 2000 landless families take possession of the palm oil plantations of Miguel Facusse, the country's largest landowner and a key player in the coup. The camera follows three farmers over four years as they build their new communities on occupied land, in the face of the regime's violent response, while waiting for the elections The Resistance hopes will restore the national democratic project.
Social Justice Film Night is on the 3rd Thursday of every month.
