WOW! What an incredible OPEN CINEMA Season 12 finale...
Our last event of the season was unlike anything we've done before. We didn't coordinate one of our typical screenings, which allowed us to further explore our use of online tools to engage and connect with audiences, filmmakers, cinema hosts and social issues. Read on to find out more about how we harnessed the potential of our hybrid cinema format in collaboration with The Secret Trial 5 and the Stop Bill C-51 movement.

From March 12-25, we joined the Secret Trial 5 filmmaking team on their cross Canada screening tour -- virtually!
The Secret Trial 5's 12-city tour coincided with the wave of action against Bill C-51: we engaged online to help tell the story of the film, the issues and their cross Canada journey. Seen above in Kingston (L-R): Noah Bingham (ST5 Producer), Amar Wala (ST5 Director), Queen's University Professor Sharry Aiken (who is in the film) and Madeleine Cohen (ST5 Co-Producer).

On March 25, the OPEN CINEMA team travelled to Vancouver to meet the filmmakers for the first time!
Pictured above (L-R): Carol-Lynne Michaels (OPEN CINEMA Production Coordinator) Angela Hemming (OPEN CINEMA Digital Coordinator), Noah Bingham (ST5 Producer), Mandy Leith (OPEN CINEMA Program Director), Amar Wala (ST5 Director) and Mark Planiden (OPEN CINEMA Technical Director).
The final screening of the tour drew a big crowd at the beautiful Vancity Theatre and an engaged post screening discussion, online and live in multiple venues.
We were so impressed with The Vancity Theatre, who hosted the screening. OPEN CINEMA added value to their event by coordinating an engaged #ST5film tweetchat and webcasting the post-screening discussion about secret trials, Bill C-51 and security in Canada. The discussion was moderated by Vancity Programmer Tom Charity and the filmmakers were joined by BC Civil Liberties Association Senior Counsel Carmen Cheung and Harsha Walia (No One Is Illegal).

Our hybrid cinema experience spawned other ST5 screenings!
80 people filled the West Coast Greens Community Space and Marylou Wakefield hosted a pop-up screening at her house. Many others joined us by watching the film online via VOD provider VHX.
