An exciting event to showcase First Nations’ sustainable initiatives

Hi PAOV,

If we asked you to write a few sentences on provincial parks, you could probably come up with something. The same goes for national parks.

But what about tribal parks?

Despite being one of the most exciting alternatives to status quo industrial development, tribal parks are relatively unknown in BC, especially amongst the non-Indigenous public.

We want to change that.

Tribal parks are land and resource management systems designed, declared and managed by First Nations. The goal is to protect environmental and human well-being, incorporating respectful, sustainable economic activity and conservation of key ecosystems.

Several First Nation communities are in various stages of tribal park declaration and management. We’re hosting an evening forum called Tribal Parks 101 to highlight the voices and experiences of some of these Nations and to raise awareness about tribal parks.

Tribal Parks 101: From Clayoquot to the Chilcotin + Beyond
Monday, April 27th
7:00 p.m.
Atomique Productions HQ
1501 Douglas St., Victoria
(view map)

The forum-style event will feature presentations from:

  • Eli Enns – North American Director of the ICCA Consortium and Tribal Parks expert
  • Saya Masso – Tla-o-qui-aht Natural Resource and Tribal Parks Manager
  • Chief Russell Myers-Ross – Yunesit’in Government

We’ll also screen two short films featuring Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks in Clayoquot Sound, and the new Dasiqox Tribal Park in Tsilhqot’in Nation territory.

Find out more and invite your friends on Facebook.

Come join us for an informative and inspiring evening and together we’ll learn the Tribal Parks basics – what, why, where, when and how – from First Nations working to establish and manage Tribal Parks in BC and beyond. See you on the 27th!

Sincerely,
