SHD Hello PAOV,

Some of the world’s most iconic political filmmakers have just come on board with SHD’s upcoming short documentary about surveillance. World famous culturejammers The Yes Men and Mark Achbar the director of The Corporation and Noam Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent have all signed on as Executive Producers. With their guidance we are certain this film will have a big impact when released before the 2015 election.

You can see the new trailer here.

Three years ago Wikileaks revealed that an organization I work for was being spied on by a private American intelligence firm known as Stratfor.1 At first I found the news very unsettling, I felt like I had to look over my shoulder and every new person I met became a possible undercover agent. However, I quickly realized that acting out of fear was exactly what they wanted.

At the same time I was seeing the impacts of climate change ravaging the Philippines, where much of my family lives. One unprecedented storm even destroyed my cousin’s home. When I considered Canada’s role in this global crisis, I knew I had no choice but to continue opposing this government’s oil agenda. So I accepted that my emails were being read and my phone calls were being listened to, but I did not let that discourage me from taking action. In fact I started working with friends to take bolder direct action.2 In the three years since I’ve been arrested three times for my role in climate justice direct actions.

In 2013 Edward Snowden revealed to the world that scale of state surveillance had grown unconscionable. At the time I realized that more and more people were about to experience the same fear that I had. So two years ago the SHD team, with the support of 100+ donors, embarked on a journey to make a film that would help people process this fear of surveillance and turn it into an emboldened spirit of resistance. With 72 hours left in our crowdfunding campaign and a federal election right around the corner, we have a deeply talented professional crew bringing this film together.

You can watch trailers and clips from the film here.

The Conservative juggernaut has raised $6.3 million dollars in the first three months of 2015, nearly double any other party’s total.3 By comparison, we are a tiny organization that packs a big punch. We have no full time staff being paid an annual salary. We use our resources efficiently by contracting some of the brightest independent artistic talent in the country on a project by project basis.

In recent weeks 300+ donors have donated online or by mail to help bring us more than 50% of the way to our goal. We’re committed to using creativity and courage to make an unprecedented impact in the 2015 election, but we can’t do it without your help.

If just a fraction of the people reading this email donate $10 we can reach our goal. Can you join them?

With ferocity and hope,

Sean, SHD.ca
