One week to demand an assessment for LNG on the Fraser

Hi PAOV,

In the rush to frack BC’s landscape and ship the gas off of our west coast, the gas industry will stop at nothing. That includes constructing a major new liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping jetty right in the mouth of the mighty Fraser River!

Gas company Wespac Midstream wants to build an export terminal for fracked gas on the banks of the Fraser River in Delta, BC. If constructed, the facility could ship up to 4.76 billion cubic metres of liquefied gas every single year. It would also bring massive LNG tankers onto the Fraser – one of the world’s greatest salmon rivers – for the very first time.

We don’t want that to happen. That’s why we are asking you to write to Canada’s federal government to demand that a comprehensive assessment take place for this dangerous project.

The BC government and the federal government often have to figure out which of them is in the best position to conduct environmental assessments of this kind. When it comes to Wespac’s LNG Project, the BC government wants to be responsible for any assessment of the project. It has asked the federal regulators at the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) to step out of the way, so its own regulators can review the project.

Now I don’t know about you, but I suspect the BC government is hoping to rush this project through, given their vocal support for the LNG industry. We hope CEAA will retain control over the process and ensures that a comprehensive assessment takes place.

CEAA is now asking for public comments on whether or not the BC government should conduct the assessment, and whether or not there should be an assessment at all!

We need you to write to CEAA now, and ask them to conduct a proper assessment of this absurd project. The deadline for public input is coming up fast – all comments must be submitted by next Thursday, June 11, 2015.

You can see a detailed description of the project here.

The impact LNG will have on our climate must be considered, as well as this project’s impact on the famous salmon that migrate through the Fraser River watershed. The threat that potentially explosive LNG tankers pose to communities near the project also needs to be fully exposed.

Thank you for taking the time to help keep LNG off the mighty Fraser! So far this project has been taking shape under the radar, so it’s important that we spread the word about this important issue. We need to move quickly on behalf of our climate and our wild salmon.
