Standing firm to Stop Site C
r1 ...
It's a landmark moment in B.C.
Today, July 22nd, the West Moberly and Prophet River First Nations have their day in court. This is the week court challenges are being heard that stand to hold back the largest industrial project in our history. Treaty 8 First Nations, alongside their farmer neighbours, have fought Site-C valiantly for over 30 years.
People in BC need to know that, with the withdrawal of Alberta First Nations from their legal challenge, Treaty 8 are the last line of defence against the dam. The stakes could not be higher. Treaty 8 are in no way losing courage: they are holding firm because they know they can win this case.
Your support is much appreciated today: as Treaty 8 take their place in court, they know they are standing shoulder to shoulder with people like you.
We've had some amazing champions during this campaign. Paddlers at Paddle for the Peace set up online fundraisers and have so far raised $8000; Graze Restaurant donated a portion of proceeds to the legal challenge; and in the past week, individual donors— through $25, $50, and and even $500 contributions— have taken our fundraising total to $75000. Thanks to your efforts, and to the generosity of people we've all been reaching out to, we're a third of the way to our goal of $250,000. Funds will go directly to assist with the legal costs of saving the Peace.
We have always believed that the legal actions taken byFirst Nations were an obstacle to this project going forward. So it’s a beautiful curiosity that, instead of bulldozers and blasting, what you hear in the Peace River valley this week is... birdsong. BC Hydro made promises to have shovels in the ground this week, yet no crews have showed up. There is no way BC Hydro or the government will admit that we are in their way, but the peaceful silence in Peace Valley speaks louder than words.
Thank you for standing with us and calling others to join the circle.
In solidarity,
Susan Smitten & the RAVEN team
