The latest from the Walbran Valley
Dear PAOV,
It’s been a busy few weeks on our red-hot campaign to save the Walbran Valley on Vancouver Island – one of Canada’s most important old-growth forests!
Will you take action to help save this special place?
Since we learned of logging company Teal Jones’ plans to cut in this endangered forest last spring, we’ve been sounding the alarm and building public opposition to this destructive and short-sighted plan. We’ve worked with local allies and other organizations to arrange public meetings, rallies and trips out to the Walbran. We’ve drawn media attention to the issue and educated thousands on the importance and scarcity of old-growth forests.
But just last week, the government granted a permit for the first of Teal Jones’ cutblocks.
This week, I travelled to the Walbran with an ally from Sierra Club BC. When we hiked into the recently-approved cutblock, we were blown away by what we found.
There on the steep northern bank of the South Walbran River, we found a stunning grove of old-growth cedar, Sitka spruce, hemlock, amabilis fir and Douglas-fir!
We named this new stand the Black Diamond Grove, because of the steep slope it sits on. Its crown jewel is the Leaning Tower Cedar, a massive redcedar tree that could be 1000 years old – hundreds of years older than Italy’s famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. You can check out photos of the grove here.
This spectacular forest is imminently threatened: Teal Jones could start logging any day now.
But we still live in a democracy. Focused public pressure has forced the BC government to step in and protect old-growth forest in the past. We can do it again, but we need your help.
If you haven’t yet, please write to BC’s Premier and Minister of Forests and ask the government to protect what’s left of the Walbran Valley.
Then, share the link with 5 friends.
If we raise our voices together, we’ll generate a call for old-growth conservation that the BC government won’t be able to ignore.
For the old-growth,
Torrance Coste | Vancouver Island Campaigner
