CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
2016 Greater Victoria Unsheltered and Sheltered Point-in-Time Count
Happy New Year!!! The Community Social Planning Council
(CSPC) is recruiting volunteers to take part in a count of people experiencing
homelessness in Greater Victoria on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. This
count is dependent on volunteer participation and it is estimated that we will
need 200 volunteers to make this count successful!!
The more volunteers we have, the more people we can enumerate and survey, which
means we will be able to better capture the extend of homelessness in the
region.
The count will be held from 12:00pm – 12:00am both inside housing facilities and out-of-doors on the streets. By volunteering for the count you will help gather information that will assist planners, funders and agencies develop appropriate responses to homelessness in... our region as well as measure progress in ending homelessness.
We hope you will participate in the count by completing an online application form as soon as possible, although we will still accept applicants up to Friday, January 22, 2016. Please feel free to forward this invitation to people you think would be interested in taking part in the count. We are looking for volunteers who are:
What is involved? The PiT count involves conducting a brief, anonymous survey with people who are experiencing homelessness. The shelter survey is conducted inside shelters and the outside count is conducted out-of-doors, walking around a specific area or neighborhood. Each volunteer must attend a two-hour training session and must be 19 years of age or older.
A count of people who were experiencing homelessness took place in 2005 and a survey of the needs of people who were experiencing homelessness took place in 2007. Point-in-Time counts add important information to our understanding of how people experience homelessness in our region.
Thank you for your willingness to participate in the count and help us recruit others to help us with the count. In January, we will be doing a month of introductory discussion groups that are excellently tailored to people new to Marxism. Due to the recent electoral events in Venezuela (where the Opposition took a majority of the seats), we will be starting with an analysis of the Bolivarian Revolution and the effects this electoral shift will likely have.
All events will be held at QV Cafe (1701 Government St). The links lead to the literature being discussed - prior reading is encouraged but not required. Discussion is open to everybody in a safe environment and every opinion will be heard.
Here are the four events we will be doing in January:
January 7th @ 6:30PM - Counter-Revolutionary Victory in Venezuela
The recent victory of the Opposition Coalition has been a major setback for the Bolivarian Revolution. The Opposition has vowed to repeal many of the laws passed by Hugo Chavez, including the Law of Fair Prices and the Health and Safety at Work law. Opposition figures have also vowed to privatize many of the state-owned services and utilities. Come to discuss this drastic change in Venezuelan politics!

January 14th @ 6:30PM - The Communist Manifesto
Easily the most famous text with regards to socialism, the Manifesto was written in 1848 and summarized the thoughts of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels on the class structure of society and the inherent root of oppression in capitalism.

January 21st @ 6:30PM - Socialism: Utopian and Scientific
A short pamphlet by Friedrich Engels outlining the differences between various historical and current versions of socialism and the relevance of these different philosophies on concrete political goals.

January 28th @ 6:30PM - Wage-Labour and Capital
An introduction to the economic critique of capitalism written by Karl Marx in 1847. The contents cover the long-term implications of capitalism (including the basis for collapses similar to the recent recessions) and the social relations that are inherent to private ownership of the means of production.
