#WalbranWednesday and more opportunities for action

Walbran Wednesday - Feb. 3

Dear PAOV,

We’re starting February off with a bang – we’re holding two actions in the next ten days to ramp up the pressure on the government of BC to stop the destruction of the Central Walbran Valley!

The beginning of a new month means it’s time for #WalbranWednesday – our monthly ‘phone blitz’ for the ancient forest.

Last month, our third Walbran Wednesday action targeted Steve Thomson, BC's Minister of Forests. It was our largest phone blitz yet. We usually pick different targets each month, but Minister Thomson has failed to take action on this crisis, so we're going to call him back this Wednesday, February 3rd to renew our demand that he protect the Central Walbran Valley!

Then, a week later, we’re taking the crisis in the Walbran to the Minister of Forests’ doorstep! Through a creative art action, we’ll present our clear-cut simple message to BC’s decision makers: it’s time to end old-growth logging, starting in the Central Walbran Valley.

In the first month of 2016, the campaign to save the Walbran Valley has really heated up. Logging company Teal Jones has acquired a court injunction in an attempt to keep the public out of the Walbran Valley. Every day we receive more calls from concerned citizens who can’t understand how the BC government can still justify issuing permits to cut down 1000-year-old trees.

Last week, a citizen was arrested for blocking Teal Jones’ workers from accessing cutblocks in the Walbran – the first arrest in this iconic valley in over two decades. So far, the logging that begun last November is limited to the south side of the Walbran River, but loggers are moving closer and closer to the intact 486-hectare stand on the north side, and the magnificent ancient groves it contains.

The provincial government has a duty to step up and bring an end to this conflict by setting the Central Walbran Valley off-limits to logging. Concerted public pressure has brought about this change in the past, and together we can make this happen again.

I hope you can join us for one or both of these events!
