Dear Paov,
Six years is a long time to fight.
That’s how long we’ve been opposing the proposed Raven Coal Mine on central Vancouver Island. That’s how long we’ve been standing with communities in the Comox and Alberni Valleys.
With their help and yours, we held rallies and public meetings, organized letter-writing campaigns, and advocated for a modern economy that leaves coal underground.
Last week, our collective efforts finally paid off.
Late on April 6, BC environmental regulators terminated the review for Raven Coal, ending the project once and for all!
This is a huge victory for every Canadian concerned about clean water, intact ecosystems, public safety and climate change – and it’s thanks to you.
This is also a significant step forward in the transition to healthier and more sustainable local industries that are less dependent on the boom-and-bust cycles that have hurt communities from Port Hardy to Sooke.
The Wilderness Committee can’t win campaigns like this on our own – success relies on concerned citizens and communities. Local leaders on the mid-Island worked tirelessly to raise awareness and build momentum against Raven Coal from day one. The opportunity to work with these people has been a great privilege for me.
As we celebrate the fact that the threat posed by Raven Coal is gone, we are ramping up our efforts on other critical issues.
The situation in Vancouver Island’s rainforests is grim: the vast majority of old-growth has been removed, and the job-killing practice of raw log exports is at record levels. In the Central Walbran Valley, we’re calling on industry and government to spare the last remaining tracts of these globally significant ecosystems.
And we continue to monitor a slew of proposals to increase fossil fuel exports through the Salish Sea, placing coastal ecosystems at risk of a spill and worsening the climate crisis in the process.
We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, but the Raven Coal campaign proves once again that when we stand together, we can secure the wild future of our dreams.
This victory belongs to you, and I thank you sincerely for being part of the work we do.
I hope we can count on your continued support moving forward; each win is a testament to your passion to protect Canada’s wild, and we’ll need you more than ever in the fight to protect our ancient forests and coastlines.
For clean water and healthy forests,
Torrance Coste | Vancouver Island Campaigner
