Walk 4 the Salish Sea Tomorrow
Pulling Together: All-Nations Gathering Against Kinder Morgan

May 25th, 2017
1st night of the Walk 4 the Salish Sea!
6-9 pm
Tsawout First Nations
7728 Tetayut Rd, Saanichton
W̱SÁNEĆ territory
The Tsawout First Nations are hosting a community potluck feast with speakers and music on the first night of the Walk 4 the Salish Sea!, a 4-day 77 km all-ages march from Victoria (Lekwungen territory) to the Kinder Morgan marine terminal in Burnaby (Tsleil-waututh territory), against the dramatic increase of fossil fuel export projects on the Salish Sea.
The event is a fundraiser to support indigenous-led action against the Kinder Morgan pipeline and tanker expansion. This project... will lead to a seven-fold increase in tanker traffic carrying toxic diluted tar sands bitumen across the Salish Sea, with risks that are unacceptable to coastal communities. The project was approved without the consent of 59 First Nations and 22 municipalities and violates First Nations constitutional and Douglas Treaty rights.
The evening will begin with the Willy Thomas Pow wow Singers followed by local W̱SÁNEĆ speakers from the Tsawout and Tsartlip First Nations including: Tsawout Elders Belinda Claxton, Eric Pelkey, Councillor Mavis Underwood, Tsartlip Chief Don Tom, carver Charles Elliot and North Saanich-Gulf Islands MLA Adam Olsen and Saanich and the Islands MP Elizabeth May and others, with musical performances by Phil Vernon and prominent youth folktivist singer-songwriter Luke Wallace.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will be allocated 50/50 to the Pull Together legal defense fund for the Coldwater, Tsleil-waututh and Squamish nations fighting the pipeline in court and the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, Coast Protectors.
