Activists:
Participate in the Occupation @ 50 Campaign.

Amnesty International’s research team in East Jerusalem and Amnesty Canada’s IOTP cogroup are asking for your participation in a one year campaign launched last week to mark the 50th anniversary of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

We are calling on Canada to ban Israeli settlement goods from our markets, and to stop companies domiciled in our country from operating in settlements or trading in settlement goods.

Condemning 50 years of settlements, 50 years of war crimes, is no longer enough.... It's time for action.

It’s time for Canada to stop fuelling Palestinian suffering.

TELL PRIME MINISTER TRUDEAU:

BAN SETTLEMENT PRODUCTS AND STOP CANADIAN COMPANIES FROM OPERATING IN SETTLEMENTS!

For the last 50 years, Israel has been forcing thousands of Palestinians off their land, occupying and illegally using it to create settlements that exclusively house Jewish Israeli settlers.

Entire Palestinian communities have been displaced by these settlements. Their homes and livelihoods have been destroyed, they’ve had restrictions enforced on their movement, access to their own water, land and other natural resources. The communities have also been violently attacked by the Israeli military and settlers. We must act now.

We want Canada to stop enabling the economy that keeps these illegal settlements growing and fuels the suffering of Palestinians: and you can help.

The issue is not just about Israel taking Palestinian land and resources illegally. Canada lets goods produced in these settlements into our markets, and allows Canadian companies to operate in settlements. All of this helps the illegal settlements profit and thrive.

Call on Canada now to ban Israeli settlement goods from entering our markets, and to stop companies based in Canada operating in settlements or trading in their goods - and help put an end to the cycle of violations suffered by Palestinians living under Israel’s occupation.
SIGN AND SHARE THE PETITION BELOW WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
At the end of our one-year campaign, a broader range of actors, including activists, journalists and policy makers, will be more aware and outspoken about the impact that Israel’s prolonged occupation has had on the daily life and human rights of Palestinians over the last 50 years.

We will have mobilised a broad range of activists across Canada and from various parts of the world to take action and pressure their governments to ban settlement products.

Some states will have taken action towards banning settlement products.

Human rights defenders working on equal rights, an end to the occupation and holding Israel accountable will feel empowered and recognised for their work.

Israel’s relentless land grab:
Illegal Israeli settlements

Israel’s policy of constructing and expanding illegal settlements on occupied Palestinian land is one of the main driving forces behind the mass human rights violations resulting from the occupation.

Over the past 50 years, Israel has demolished tens of thousands of Palestinian properties and displaced large swathes of the population to build homes and infrastructure to illegally settle its own population in the occupied territories.

It has also diverted Palestinian natural resources such as water and agricultural land for settlement use.

Daily life under occupation:
Trapped and oppressed

As well as illegally building settlement homes and infrastructure on Palestinian land, Israeli and international businesses in settlements have established a thriving economy to sustain their presence and expansion.

This “settlement enterprise” relies on unlawfully appropriated Palestinian resources, including land, water and minerals, to produce goods that are exported and sold for private profit.

Hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of settlement goods are exported internationally each year, including to Canada.
Here are some fantastic resources to learn more; share widely and creatively:

PRESS RELEASE
At the start of the campaign, we published this Press Release on Amnesty Canada's website, which was also distributed via social media.

STORY PAGE
The International Secretariat (IS) produced an amazing Story Page outlining the main violations perpetrated by Israel in the context of Israel’s occupation.

PUBLIC STATEMENT
The IS compiled a thorough Public Statement explaining our demand. It spotlights renewed settlement expansion, how the settlements are sustained, the ways in which these settlements cause mass human rights violations, and Canada's responsibility as a party to the Fourth Geneva Convention to put these violations to an end.
50 YEARS OF SETTLEMENTS

600,000+
Jewish Israeli settlers living on occupied Palestinian land

100,000+
Hectares of land appropriated by Israel from Palestinians since 1967

50,000
Homes and structures demolished by Israel in the OPT over the past 50 years

50 YEARS OF VIOLATIONS

4.9+ MILLION
Palestinians facing daily restrictions on their movement.

ZERO
Criminal investigations conducted into the more than 1,000 complaints of torture submitted to Israel since 2001.

60%+
Area of the West Bank under full Israeli control.

13%
Area of East Jerusalem zoned for Palestinian construction. Illegal Jewish Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem cover 35%. Israel illegally annexed East Jerusalem formally in 1980." By banning settlement goods and putting in place laws and regulations that stop companies from operating in Israeli settlements, governments worldwide have an opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of millions of Palestinians who have endured decades of injustice, indignity and discrimination. "- Salil Shetty,
Secretary General
Amnesty International

" Please join me and add your voice to our call that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau act to help shut down the economy that fuels illegal settlements in the Occupied Territories. It has been 50 years; the violations have to end. Stop supporting Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land. " - Alex Neve,
Secretary General
Amnesty International Canada

WE ARE ENABLING AND MOBILIZING ACTIVISTS ACROSS CANADA TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT ISRAEL'S ILLEGAL OCCUPATION AND THE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IT CAUSES.

BE PART OF THE CHANGE.
CONTACT US, AND TOGETHER WE WILL SHOW SOLIDARITY BY:

  1. Petitioning and advocating on the call for states to ban settlement products:
Share our press releases, public statements and videos on social media asking people to sign our online petition calling on third states to take action and ban settlement products from entering their markets. These signatures will be delivered to the Canadian government, accompanied with letters and advocacy meetings calling on them to take action and ban settlement products.

  2. Parliamentary debates / questions:
Feed into parliamentary debates that are happening on Israel/Palestine, and lobby your members of parliament on our concerns regarding the occupation.

  3. Media engagement / social media actions:
Support our media work by finding sympathetic local media outlets that would feature our work on Israel/Palestine, or that we could encourage to write about the occupation if we help connect them with strong individual stories. Participate in our social media actions by sharing our graphics and statements at relevant key dates. Contact us for a list of targets and suggested messaging.

  4. Creative actions / stunts:
The 50th anniversary of the occupation provides plenty of material for creative actions and stunts. Organize and take part outside the Embassy of Israel or a key landmark in your city. Contact us to sync your action with others across Canada for even more impact. Examples include:

    - Erecting a wall to replicate the fence/wall built by Israel in the occupied West Bank.
The Israeli authorities claim that it is a defensive measure designed for its own security, but most of it is on Palestinian land encircling Palestinian towns and villages, cutting off communities and families from each other. It separates farmers from their land and cuts off Palestinians from their places of work, schools, health care facilities and other essential services. Set up a mock wall and use this to raise awareness about the unjust wall in the occupied West Bank.

    - Setting up mock military checkpoints.
Use this to raise awareness about what it means for an ordinary Palestinian civilian to live under military occupation.

    - Leading a flash mob.
There have been some impressive flash mobs led by Amnesty International in recent years to raise awareness and mobilise. Such flash mob actions to raise awareness and mobilise are encouraging (see an IS lead flash mob " style="color:rgb(0,0,0);text-decoration-line:underline" target="_blank">here and an AI Italy flash mob " style="color:rgb(0,0,0);text-decoration-line:underline" target="_blank">here.) Take pictures of your protest or flash mob and share them on social media, tagging Amnesty International (FB / Twitter), Amnesty Canada (FB /Twitter), and Amnesty Canada’s IOTP Cogroup (FB / Twitter).

  5. Speaking tour / panel discussions:
A good way to raise awareness and mobilise people is through organising speaking tours and panel discussions. The panels can consist of leading figures in Canada, as well as outside country experts. We have a list of Palestinian and Israel human rights organizations who have expressed interest in taking part in such tours.

  6. Film screenings and discussions:
Organize a film screening and discussion afterwards. This could be done with various age groups, encouraging them to take action afterwards. We will be happy to provide a list of suggested films.

  7. Connecting human rights defenders:
A good way to mobilise and raise awareness, especially in a way that resonates with different audiences, is to connect Palestinian or Israeli human rights defenders with leading defenders in Canada, perhaps through a video call. Ask them to talk about their experiences of defending human rights in their own contexts, sharing difficulties and tactics. Then get the human rights defender in Canada to write about or talk about this experience either on social media or any other platform. This mobilises their audiences into taking action to end human rights violations in the OPT.

50 YEARS OF SETTLEMENTS. 50 YEARS OF DISPOSSESSION. 50 YEARS OF FORCED EVICTIONS, DEMOLITIONS & FORCIBLE TRANSFER. 50 YEARS OF UNLAWFUL KILLINGS. 50 YEARS OF ARBITRARY ARRESTS, DETENTION AND UNFAIR TRIALS. 50 YEARS OF VIOLATIONS AND WAR CRIMES.

IT'S TIME FOR IT TO END.
Thank you for your support. Together we can bring justice to those without hope.
