Dear Paov,
Expanding Canada’s protected areas is in our hands.

I am very pleased to share with you our latest paper, Canada: Stand up for Nature. And to let you know we have a tremendous new opportunity right now.
Nations around the world are scrambling to designate enough of their territory to conserve nature. We face rapidly expanding industry and climate change impacts that endanger our critical wildlife habitats. Earth is facing an extinction crisis worse than any suffered in human existence.
Canada, with our huge expanse of natural lands and waters, has actually been too slow at designating new protected areas. But with your help that could change.
It’s in Canada’s nature – and actions – to save wilderness and our climate.
To live up to our international commitments and to help stem the extinction wave Canada has promised to raise the level of protected areas from 10.6 per cent of our total land area to 17 per cent by 2020. Scientists want each nation to then move rapidly to a 50 per cent protection level. Several nations are already at 50 per cent – but here in Canada we are still just lacing up our running shoes – we haven’t even begun to race. That’s got to change.
This massive land-use planning effort will require the help and guidance of Indigenous Peoples and communities from coast to coast to coast, as well as active encouragement from all of us.
Read our latest report. Then use the information on the back page to contact Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. Tell her how much you want our government to live up to their 17 per cent by 2020 commitment and then 50 per cent.
Consider a gift to help the Wilderness Committee continue to educate and take critical action on wilderness preservation. Your gift of $35, $60, $150 or more is what’s needed to keep this message in front of legislators, allies, media, and in our communities.
Thank you! Together, we can stand up for nature and win the race to 50 per cent!
