This weekend, RAVEN joined tens of thousands of people who lit up the streets of Vancouver to Walk for Reconciliation. It was amazing to be standing together with Indigenous Peoples to show solidarity and find an honourable way forward.
It’s hard to believe that we’d let a tar sands pipeline interrupt this progress, but all signs point to Kinder Morgan starting construction on their Westridge Terminal. The company’s responsibility — and liability — ends with the pipeline, but for the people of the Salish Sea, the risk to our waters, our coastline and our communities multiplies with every bitumen laden supertanker that pulls out of Burnaby Inlet.
Watch this new Pull Together video and meet the Indigenous Peoples who are leading the charge against the dirtiest industry on the planet. Indigenous communities — from the Athabasca River to the Salish Sea — are standing up to protect our common future. We need to stand with them: we can’t let this climate disaster happen on our watch.
In just one week, First Nations will be in court to face Kinder Morgan in court. We’ve already raised $540k to ensure they have the legal representation they need to argue their solid case against the approval of this pipeline and tankers project. We need just $75,000 to reach our goal.
It’s as much a privilege as it is a burden to be able to support this historic legal challenge. The fires and droughts we’ve suffered have not been enough to persuade our leaders to change course. But this fire from below, from our grassroots movements made up of passionate people burning for change, is unstoppable. It’s an inspiration to be in your company.
Thank you from RAVEN,
...and the countless dedicated volunteers who are rocking Pull Together!
p.s. The creativity and commitment that Indigenous leaders are inspiring is amazing: people across the continent are stepping up by organizing events, fundraising online, and holding marches and rallies in support of Indigenous Peoples. Want to be part of it? Take the pledge to join the 9 Days of Solidarity actions and a Pull Together organizer will be in touch.
