Next Deadline for Greater Victoria RESILIENT STREETS MICRO-GRANTS:

October 31, 2017

Did you recently attend a Resilient Streets Kick-off workshop?

Interested in building more connections with your neighbours on your street or in your apartment/condomium building?

Got some ideas on how to build community & resilience with your neighbours that you want to make happen?

If you live in Greater Victoria, then you can apply for an easy-to-access Resilient Streets micro-grant. We are offering 2 types of micro-grants to help you get started. Find out more and apply HERE for either of them.

The Greater Victoria Placemaking Network (GVPN) has been mapping little free libraries across the CRD for the past two years, and have been helping people in building their own little 'take a book - leave a book' book boxes. With the goal of helping people install more and more of these fantastic placemaking and community-building boxes, GVPN has partnered with our Resilient Streets program to deliver workshops on how to set up your own little free library. Dates for workshops will be announced soon, so keep an eye open and get in touch with GVPN to get on the workshop list. Be sure to visit GVPN's little free library map and let us know if any are missing. We are excited that the City of Victoria is getting close to having its 150th little free library, and it is our goal to have 150 LFLs installed in Victoria by the end of the year to help celebrate Canada's 150th birthday.

CITY OF VICTORIA

My Great Neighbourhoods Grants
Fall 2017 intake is open until October 15th!

Have you got a great idea for your block?

City of Victoria My Great Neighbourhood Grants are an opportunity for residents to bring neighbours together and create projects and plan activities that you want to see in your neighbourhoods!

The fall intake for these grants is open now!
Projects can range from creating gathering spots for socializing or decorating a neighbourhood with a mural to setting up a little library on a street corner. Other possible activities can involve getting people together to meet each other at celebrations, clean up the neighbourhood, or set up emergency response programs on a block. Your ideas can be as ambitious or modest as you like.

You can find more information on the City website. Think about something that you might like to do and then call the City of Victoria to explore your ideas with a member of the Neighbourhood Team.

Building Resilient Neighbourhoods Visits Australia

This September, BRN’s Stacy Barter was part of a rich knowledge-exchange in Australia, discussing how to make life in “vertical streets” like condominium and apartment buildings more socially engaged and resilient. Like many urban centres in BC, Australia's cities are also undergoing an increase in high density living. Many local governments and their partners are exploring how to foster community building as an important aspect of liveability in apartments and condominiums. Learn more about the Australian workshops and speaking events we were part of HERE

Stay tuned and This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you are interested in being part of our upcoming "vertical streets" pilots this fall.

TEDX: Take a Street and Build a Community

How well do you know your neighbours? Suburban life is often isolating and rarely a true community experience. In this TEDx talk about Hulbert Street in Perth, Australia, Shani Graham explains how she helped lead a sustainable-living shift that ultimately resulted in strong neighbourly relationships, the fences pulled down and the establishment of a street festival.

How To Create a Vertical Village

As we are starting the planning for our "Vertical Streets" pilots this fall, we have been learning from others who are doing great community building work in apartment and condominium buildings. The Transition Network’s Caring Collaborative have produced a great manual for helping create closer social ties and a greater experience of community in apartments and condominium buildings. Check out this great resource HERE
