Dear Paov,
Have you ever heard a friend or family member say, "There is nothing we can do"?
Perhaps you have felt this way yourself – thinking about the myriad of threats to the lands and waters that you care about. It is a difficult, draining feeling.
That is why it's important to celebrate victories like the defeat of the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and tankers project, because they demonstrate that no risky industrial development is “too big to stop."Will you give $5 a month to strengthen environmental laws in Canada?
In the face of risky development proposals like Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain expansion, this win against the Northern Gateway project is a reminder that when communities speak together, when we strategize and support each other in service of a future we believe in, there is no such thing as insurmountable odds.
The Enbridge victory also reminds us that legal strategies grounded in both Canadian and Indigenous law can provide a critical and game-changing foundation for collaboration. West Coast’s approach is unique in the way we bridge legal traditions and harness the power of law in order to create a more sustainable future for all.
West Coast is working to transform the legal landscape, and our efforts are paying off. Reports from the expert panels that reviewed Canada’s environmental assessment processes and the National Energy Board, as well as the report from the Standing Committee on the Fisheries Act, align closely with many of the recommendations we’ve made, and we continue to hold the government’s feet to the fire to restore lost protections under the Navigation Protection Act. Meanwhile, recent provincial commitments to revitalize environmental assessment and land use planning also present renewed opportunities to achieve environmental gains here in BC.
But our work is far from over – and now it's time to ensure government environmental commitments become a legal reality.
As we move ahead in 2018, we are confident that we will secure strong, lasting environmental legal protection in Canada. In joining us, you have a real chance to impact change and ensure the lands and waters you cherish are protected through law.
