Where: Human and Social Development Building, A240, UVic
When: Janunary 31st, 7----9 pm, 2018 What: Frontline Indigenous Leadership Speaks on Fish Farm Struggle Fundraising: Event By Donation, and Raffle for Local Art The 31-year struggle to evict open-net fish farms is approaching a crucial date: in June, the BC NDP government that swore to uphold the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People will decide whether to revoke or renew many of the tenures for Marine Harvest and Cermaq. The continued clear and unified voice of eight Kwakwaka'wakw nations should make this a simple decision: Fish Farms Out Now! We invite you to come and hear the latest in the struggle from the indigenous leadership at the front of it. We will hear from Molina Dawson... and Karissa Glendale who were part of occupying the Midsummer Island fish farm and have been targeted by Marine Harvest for upholding their ancestral responsibilities to the land. We will also hear from hereditary leadership about a key meeting with John Horgan and other NDP cabinet members happening the previous day. The NDP's decision on Site C has so far shown that the Horgan government is continuing the long, colonial history of 'disappointing' indigenous people. The NDP's decision on fish farms tenure will mark the next major test of this government's commitment to address colonialism, and we need everyone's support to pressure this government to do better.
