Tell Canada's finance minister not to subsidize polluting LNG projects

Dear Paov,

As BC Premier John Horgan meets with liquefied natural gas (LNG) backers in Asia in a futile attempt to revive the failed industry, those same companies are demanding a bailout worth billions from Canada.

Why is that? It's because BC’s LNG industry cannot survive without even more government subsidies.

Write Now! LNG companies want Canada to allow them to use cheap steel and labour to build their plants overseas and then ship them here premade. But the country has anti-dumping rules to protect Canadian jobs and would levy a 45.8 per cent tariff on the steel – driving their projects out of business.

Doing so would effectively be a whopping public subsidy for dirty fossil fuels. Moreover, it’ll be at the expense of the very jobs used to justify this polluting industry.

Paov, we need you to write to federal Minister of Finance Bill Morneau and demand he hold strong for Canadian jobs and climate action. Ask him not to waive Canada’s anti-dumping rules to prop up another dirty fossil fuel industry over local jobs. Write Your Letter Now! LNG proposals are trying to claw their way back from the dead at the public’s expense. Let’s make sure the door is closed on this polluting industry forever.
For the climate,
