RAVEN News from the Nest March r1 ... r33

We want to thank you PAOV, and send you some campaign updates.

Reconciliation is hard to fathom in a country where Indigenous Peoples have to defend their traditional lands and constitutional rights in a courtroom. Each and every RAVEN Ally has got the backs of these determined defenders, and we thank you for your ongoing commitment.

Earth Day: mark your calendars for this special event

All day Sunday, April 22 - Vancouver’s Bandidas Taqueria @ 2781 Commercial Drive is hosting a delicious fundraiser in support of RAVEN!! Don’t miss this opportunity to try their delicious tacos - and be part of the Earth Day movement for change.

  • Victory Gardens will set up a gardening booth on the sidewalk from 10:00 to 2:00 - selling plants, seeds, seedlings, and some small gardening tools.
  • Earnest Ice Cream will be out front with their scoop truck parked on the street from around 11:00 to 1:30ish. They will be donating 100% of their sales along side Bandidas to RAVEN.

Our huge thanks go out to RAVEN fundraisers!!

Moksha & Modo Yoga: Om my goodness, these yogis are a powerful force. RAVEN is deeply grateful to all of the Moksha/Modo yogis and yoga studios who individually and collectively donated so generously to RAVEN over this past winter. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This cheque is so big we can barely hold it up!!

RAVEN's Susan Smitten, Laurie MacKenzie, Airlie Ogden of Moksha Yoga and Michelle Pedersen

Luke Wallace initiated his CD launch tour in Vancouver, with proceeds going to RAVEN!!

Luke is generously donating the proceeds of his new CD “Us” to RAVEN!! “Us” is a collection of live songs recorded over a period of six months in communities all over B.C. and the Salish Sea. On this CD are the voices of hundreds of people fighting to protect the planet and the systems that sustain us. “Us” reveals the resiliency and commitment of human beings to stand up for what is right. RAVEN CAMPAIGN UPDATES:

Lake Babine Nation – Morrison Mine:

A proposed high-risk mine threatens the pristine Morrison Lake, in the heart of Lake Babine Nation (LBN) territory at the headwaters of the Skeena River. Check out our new video filmed on the shores of beautiful Babine and Morrison Lakes, with Lake Babine community members speaking, dancing and drumming powerfully for their watershed, which gives birth to nearly 90% of all Skeena salmon. While LBN waits to see if Pacific Booker Minerals will actually start the next court process, we thought you would like to see what is at stake. You will hear more when the fundraising needs to start in earnest.

Tsilhqot’in Nation v. Taseko Mines:

Unfortunately (perhaps not surprisingly), Taseko recently appealed both Federal Court decisions which confirmed the previous rejection of their proposed mine. The Tsilhqot’in have filed appearances to participate as respondents in both appeals, but they don’t have the funds to back it up at this point. Meanwhile, Taseko and Canada have a procedural court hearing scheduled for this month about Taseko’s intentions to move ahead with exploratory drilling. The main issue - whether such drilling would violate federal law - would be heard at a later date, yet to be determined. Heiltsuk Nation/Kirby spill Nathan E. Stewart: Olympia and Seattle step up for Coast Heroes

In February, Heiltsuk representatives travelled to Washington State to speak to legislators about the dangers of unsafe oil transports from WA refineries through the Salish Sea and B.C.’s Inside Passage. We were honoured to travel with them and organize fundraising events in Olympia and Washington with allied WA groups. Picture this: a group of Indigenous drummers form a circle around a bust of George Washington. As their song and drumbeats reverberate through the marbled dome of the state legislature, Frank and Kathy Brown, their regalia adorned with abalone buttons move from official to official to share the cautionary tale of a tug-and-barge crash that spilled 125,000 litres of diesel on their beaches. Pull Together - Kinder Morgan:

In support of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, RAVEN’s social media coordinator Andrea Palframan, joined 10,000 coast protectors who streamed into Coast Salish Territories/Vancouver on March 10th in support of Kwekwecnewtxw: Indigenous resistance to Kinder Morgan. Meanwhile, the Pull Together campaign is firmly committed to continuing to support the First Nations’ legal strategies. Fundraising for legal challenges is one of the important ways allies are being called to step up and stand with Indigenous Peoples, and although it can feel overwhelming, we must carry on. Check out Andrea’s blog here: https://raventrust.com/2018/03/12/whats-next-for-pull-together

We couldn't do any of this without allies like you. Please donate to help us continue our work. Donate once, or become a monthly donor as part of RAVEN's Circle of Allies.

As we stretch into new chapters of the RAVEN story, we do so with thanks for all you are doing for Indigenous rights and environmental protection.
